The Vijayanagar empire was a South Indian dynasty founded in 1336, in ruling for three centuries. Every Vijayanagar ruler contributed greatly to its beauty and richness encouraging art, trade, and architecture. In 1500, the city of Vijayanagar in Karnataka, had 50,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the world (after Peking-Beijing, China). It was twice the size of Paris, the largest European city then. Today the ruins are listed as a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site.
