  • As a 15-year-old student, he was arrested during the non-cooperation movement in 1921. On being asked for his surname, he replied ‘Azad’ (whereas, his original surname was Tiwari). The provoked judge sentenced him to 15 lashes of flogging. That’s how the name stuck to Freedom Martyr, Chandra Shekar Azad.
