The Salkia Barowari Durgotsav traces it's roots to the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 where twelve civilian freedom fighters rescued hundreds of Indian soldiers from the barracks in Barrackpore. Eight years after, the first Barowari was celebrated, one hundred and forty three years ago in remembrance of the mutiny. It is today celebrated by their descendants. ‘Baro’ means 12 and ‘wari’ or ‘yaari’ means friendly connection.
